Optionality Is The Enemy

I've been thinking about consistency a lot recently. For spring break we stayed at The Grand Hotel in Gulf Shores, Alabama. What stuck out to me was traditions that were being carried out for 100+ years at the hotel grounds. The firing of the cannon, the tea and cookies ceremony, and many other small consistent actions on the hotel grounds.

There is no wait and there is no motivation required, all that is needed is consistent action. This was reiterated to a fellow traveller that has been to this property with his family for 47 years. I admire that kind of consistency and effort. There is output created consistently, and there is a premium that comes with that sort of consistency.

I started thinking about the opposite of this, and landed on optionality. Optionality is the real enemy, it's not laziness. When people get the option to skip, they skip and it is as simple as that. It's better to be consistent on your commitment to delivery. Removing options is what consistency looks like. I've removed Reddit, YouTube, X, and Instagram so that I don't even have the option to open it. Removing the option is what consistency looks like.

Progress isn't a feeling, it's a count.

The Code

                        <progress value="11" max="30"></progress> 11/30

Pretty simple and powerful way to show progress without any CSS. I like it.
