CSS has a property called transition. You tell it what to change,
how long to take, and what curve to follow. The browser handles the rest.
It moves — but slowly. Deliberately. You don't always notice it happening.
You only notice that it happened.
That felt familiar when I first played with it. Not like code. Like life.
The frustrating truth about saving money is that for a long time, it doesn't feel like it's working. You set aside a few hundred dollars a month. You watch the number inch up. You do the math and realize your contributions are doing almost all of the heavy lifting. The growth on your existing balance is a rounding error — background noise.
That's the early phase. Your deposits are the dark bar. Your compound interest is barely registering.

At some point the bottom bar starts catching up. Then it passes you.
The crossover is the whole game. It happens when the money you've accumulated is large enough that the interest it earns in a year exceeds what you're putting in yourself. At that point, you are no longer the primary engine of your own wealth. Time is. Compounding is.
But here's the part nobody tells you clearly: you can't see the crossover coming. There's no dramatic signal. No bell. You just keep depositing, keep watching, and one day you run the numbers and realize the growth column has quietly overtaken you. The transition was always happening. You just couldn't feel it.
The gym works exactly the same way. The first month is demoralizing if you let it be. You're sore. You're slow. Your numbers are embarrassing. You go four times a week and look exactly the same in the mirror on week three as you did on day one.
But the adaptation is happening. The nervous system is learning. The muscle tissue is being broken down and rebuilt slightly stronger. You can't see it. The transition is running silently, below the surface.
12 months of consistent training — progress by month
Months 1–6 feel like nothing. Months 7–12 feel like everything at once.
Then somewhere around month six or seven, something shifts. You're lifting more than you thought you could. You're recovering faster. The body you couldn't see being built has been built. The transition completes — and it feels sudden, even though it was always slow.
Both of these things share the same shape. Long flat stretch. Invisible progress. A crossover point that looks sudden but isn't. The people who quit do it in the flat stretch — which is also the part where all the foundation is being laid.
CSS transitions taught me to think about this differently. When you write
transition: width 3.5s ease, you're not watching the bar move
in real time. You set the destination and get out of the way. The browser
handles the in-between.
That's the job. Set the destination. Keep the inputs consistent. Let the transition run. The in-between is not yours to manage — it's happening whether you're watching or not.
